Getting started!
- If you are new to these pages, I recommend starting with the standard 1-page view (switch from Dual plot to One plot, or follow this link.
Much of the complexity here arises from viewing multiple fields/models at once.
Getting started with the single-plot model display
- Choose a model, time, and run cycle under the Forecast heading on the right side of the page.
- Choose what you want to see from the menus under Plot fields
- The Tips provide information as you point to different parts of the page. Uncheck Tips to turn them off.
- Try a different Layout to see multiple model fields (or models) at the same time.
Getting started with 2/4/6/8-panel pages
- You may wish to try the straightforward single-plot display before using multiple-panel views; if so, change Dual plot to One plot.
- When you first use this page, you will see a small information box appear when moved over any windows or controls.
The 'Tips' checkbox (below/right of "Info") allows you to turn on/off these messages.
- Try using the forecast hour controls (brown vcr-like buttons) to step/animate the fields you see, forwards or backwards.
- Then click anywhere in any plot. It should be highlighted, and the small buttons ("1","2")
at top left may change.
Now use the pull-down menus to choose a model, time, and/or field to view on the one (left or right) plot you selected.
- Select/change the second plot in the same way.
- Change the small button at top to "All", and use the forecast hour controls to again step/animate both fields.
- Javascript is required for these pages.

Model details
- WRFa: 18-km grid, run 72h; NAM data used for initial/boundary conditions.
- WRFk: 18-km grid, run 72h; RUC initial data, NAM boundary condition data.
- WRFn: 18-km grid, run 120h; GFS data used for initial/boundary conditions.
- WRFx: 18-km grid, run 120h; RUC initial data, GFS boundary condition data.
- All other runs: 12-km grid, run 48h.
- All runs are currently WRF-ARW, version 3.1.1
- Physics common to all runs at present: RRTMG (new RRTM radiation) scheme; WRF single-moment 3-class microphysics (for now).
- No nudging or digital filter initialization (DFI) yet; both are planned.
- MM5 forecasts (and possibly ARPS) are planned. Some WRF forecasts will be removed.
- Recent run status/history:
00z,
12z.
Updates (most recent first):
- Wed. 12/30: added wind chill plots (will take effect starting with 00z runs tonight); fixed temp scale below 0F
- Tue. 12/29: added single-page display; installed new pages; streamlined multiple-page creation;
Save Prefs now saves plot selection for each layout (2-panel, 4-panel ...) separately.
- Mon. 12/21: using new OpenMPI cluster computing software. Some WRF runs discontinued for now.
- Thu. 10/21: made changes to (hopefully) prevent future disk space issues.
- Sat. 10/17: fixed IE problems (we hope)
- 10/11/09: new model view pages, multiple layouts and sizes.
- 10/11/09: new OpenMPI cluster computing software tested.
- 08/19/09: revised model front page; cycle & hour passed to model view page.
- New model view page in place; will serve as basis for 1-,4-,and 6-plot display views. (8/19)
- Added text box showing ICmodel / BCmodel for the run displayed there (8/10)
- Failed runs are now resubmitted - one "retry" is allowed. (8/10)
- Version 3.1.1 is the latest WRF release, and all WRF runs here now use v3.1.1 (8/9)
- WRF runs using RUC initial conditions are being tested (still with NAM or GFS lateral boundary conditions). (8/9)
- RUC IC/NAM LBC runs: WRF k,l,m,1,2,3,4,5,6,7
- RUC IC/GFS LBC runs: WRF x,y,z
- The present set of 33 forecasts (2x/day) is temporary; forecasts will be evaluated, and this set reduced.
- Fewer model output files are now processed at once, to speed availability of plots on these pages as the runs proceed (8/9)
